Join Fr. Ron Schock for a Marian pilgrimage of a lifetime! Learn the incredibly important role the Blessed Mother’s apparition at Guadalupe played in rooting Catholicism in the hearts of those in the Western Hemisphere.
Day 1 – Nov 28: Depart from DTW for your flight to Mexico City. Upon arrival, transfer to the city of Puebla, “The City of the Angels.” We will stay at a colonial hotel in downtown, close to churches, restaurants, and shops. (D)
Day 2 – Nov 29: Puebla – After breakfast, Mass at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary in the Church of Santo Domingo, continuing to the Cathedral and the church of St. Francis of Assisi to view the body of Blessed Sebastian de Aparicio whose body remains incorrupt until today. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant followed by some time to shop in El Parian, a handcraft market where it is possible to find Puebla’s famous Talavera pottery. (B, L)
Day 3 – Nov 30: Tlaxcala – After breakfast, we will visit the Shrine of San Miguel del Milagro, site of St. Michael’s apparition to Diego Lazaro, in Tlaxcala. Mass will be held at the Shrine of Our Lady of Ocotlan where Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego Bernardino in 1541 (not related to St. Juan Diego of Guadalupe). In colonial times, they used open chapels to teach the indigenous peoples the Holy Mass. It is a real treat to be able to visit one of the most beautiful open-chapels in the country! Lunch will be served at a local restaurant prior to departing for Mexico City to check in at our centrally-located hotel. (B, L)
Day 4 – Dec 1: Mexico City – On the way to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we will stop at Tlatelolco, an archeological site well known for its Plaza of Three Cultures, to visit the church of St. James, where, in addition to being the baptismal place of St. Juan Diego, the Saint famously displayed his cloak with the image of Our Lady to Bishop Zumarraga. Once at the shrine, Holy Mass will be celebrated in one of the Shrine’s high chapels. There will be time to explore the grounds and to have a closer look at the “tilma,” St. Juan Diego’s cloak which carries the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Continue to Teotihuacan, the most visited archeological site in Mexico, to have a buffet lunch at a local restaurant with live music and native dancers followed by a guided tour through the mysterious pre-Hispanic structures such as the Pyramids of the Moon and the Sun and the Quetzal-Butterfly Temple. Day 5 – Dec 2: Mexico City – After breakfast, head to Coyoacan, a charming neighborhood known for its traditional and bohemian styles to visit the church of St. John Baptist. Continue south to Xochimilco where Holy Mass will be held in a church built in the XVI century by the Franciscan missionaries. Later on, ride along the flower laden canals while enjoying lunch on board a “trajinera”, a Mexican gondola. En-route back to the hotel, a stop will be made at the Museum of Anthropology where an impressive collection of artifacts from Pre-Hispanic civilizations in Mexico is kept. (B, L)
Day 6 – Dec 3: Mexico City – Visit the beautiful church of the Holy Family where the remains of Blessed Miguel Pro are resting. After the celebration of Holy Mass, continue to the Zocalo (main square) of Mexico City to visit the largest cathedral in the Americas, as well as the National Palace, where Diego Rivera’s famous murals depicting the history of Mexico are displayed. (Lunch will be on your own.) Head to Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe to bid farewell to the Empress of the Americas. There will be time to pray and explore the grounds on your own. Farewell dinner will be served at the hotel or a local restaurant. (B, D)
Day 7 – Dec 4: After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your return flight home. (B)
