Join the Catholic Church gathered in historic prayer as the Holy Father declares that Blessed John Henry Newman’s life of continuous conversion is a worthy example of following Jesus Christ in His Church. Special guest lectures by Dr. Kenneth Parker, Professor of Historical Theology and Ryan Endowed Chairman of Newman Studies at Duquesne University. Fr. Thomas Wray, former Episcopal priest now Catholic priest, will be our spiritual director daily offering the Sacrifice of the Holy Mass and offering insight into the life and importance of Bl. John Henry Newman.
Day 1 – Tuesday, October 8: Depart JFK New York for overnight flight to Rome. Dinner and breakfast served aboard flight.
Day 2 – Wednesday, October 9: Arrive at Rome Fiumicino Airport and meet your professional Italian tour manager, then transfer to your hotel to check in (from 3:00 PM). Enjoy time to relax and freshen up. Celebrate Mass, at San Giorgio in Velabro Church, Cardinal Newman’s titular Church in Rome. Welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (D)
Day 3 – Thursday, October 10: Celebrate Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. Guided tour of the Vatican, including the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, viewing some of the world’s most inspiring works of art, including Michelangelo’s fresco of the Last Judgment. After lunch we will make a rare visit to the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith. Dinner on own. (B)
Day 4 – Friday, October 11 (included Orvieto excursion): After breakfast, drive to the striking, hilltop town of Orvieto. Upon arrival celebrate Mass at the Orvieto Cathedral, boasting one of the mostbeautiful facades in all of Italy. After Mass, take a guided tour to see the church and learn about the Eucharistic Miracle of Corpus Christi. Also, see the famous cycle of frescoes by Signorelli that inspired Michelangelo. Free time for lunch, shopping, and exploring before returning to Rome for dinner and overnight. (B, D)
Day 5 – Saturday, October 12: This morning, celebrate Mass at St Mary Major followed by a guided tour of Christian Rome, including St John in Lateran, the Cathedral of Rome. We will visit relics of Jesus Christ that were brought to Rome by St. Helena, including the newly renovated “Scala Sancta,” (The Holy Stairs), climbed by Christ in Jerusalem to be judged by Pontius Pilate, and a piece of the True Cross, a thorn from the Crown of Thorns, and nails that held Jesus to the Cross at the Basilica of the Holy Cross. We continue to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. After lunch, we will visit one of the Early Christian Catacombs. They originated in the middle of the second century and are part of a cemeterial complex occupying an area of 90 acres, with a network of galleries about 12 miles long and more than twenty meters deep. Dinner on your own and overnight. (B)
Day 6 – Sunday, October 13: Return to St Peter’s Basilica for Pope Francis’ Mass of Canonization for Blessed John Henry Newman. Time for lunch on own. In the afternoon visit the church of Santa Maria in Vallicella, known as the Chiesa Nuova, Church of St. Philip Neri, founder of Newman’s order, the Oratorians. Celebratory dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight. (B, D)
Day 7 – Monday, October 14: After breakfast, take a guided tour of Ancient Rome, including the Coliseum (inside visit) and the Roman Forum. Time for lunch on own. After lunch enjoy a walking tour of Rome to visit the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Piazza Navona. Stop as well at theVenerable English College, where Newman studied for the Catholic priesthood. Farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight. (B, D)
Day 8 – Tuesday, October 15: This morning, transfer to the airport for your return fight home. (B)
